This caprese skewers appetizer recipe is not only EASY but delicious. The combination of mozzarella, basil, tomato, olive oil, and balsamic is pure perfection. Caprese bites create a beautiful visual, as well, perfect for a backyard picnic or potluck.
Ingredients for caprese skewers
- Mozzarella balls — fresh mozzarella balls work best in the recipe (as compared with a block of mozzarella cheese). Depending on the size, you can quarter the mozzarella balls for this recipe.
- Tomatoes — I’ve used both grape and cherry tomatoes for this recipe, depending on what’s on sale or which look fresher at the time I’m purchasing them. Depending on the size, I may slice the tomatoes in halves or thirds.
- Basil — I like to fold over the basil leaves or tear them in half (depending on the size) before adding them to the caprese skewer
- Proscuitto (optional) — If you’d like to add even more protein to this appetizer, consider adding proscuitto for an extra flavor pop
- Olive oil — I like to drizzle a little olive oil on top of the skewers before I put on the balsamic glaze. It adds such depth and richness to this dish.
- Balsamic glaze — It’s easy to find balsamic glaze at a local grocery store, and you can also order it online. I drizzle it on top of the skewers as the last step before serving. Use as much or as little as you like. It’s so delicious that I tend to go a little overboard!
- Skewers — I would recommend the four or six-inch bamboo skewers, but you can use any size you’d like to customize this appetizer
How to make caprese skewers
This Mediterranean mozzarella appetizer is SO easy to make, which makes it a great potluck dish! And, it looks beautiful!
Tips to consider for caprese bites:
- Decide on a pattern: I like to start with a tomato, then basil, then mozzarella. I repeat the pattern twice for a smaller skewer.
- Watch the proportions: I sometimes cut the ingredients to make sure they are similar sizes to balance the taste.
- Prepare only parts in advance: If you need to prepare this appetizer in advance, I would recommend adding the tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella to the skewers and storing those pre-made skewers in the refrigerator. Then, add the olive oil and balsamic glaze right before serving.
